तपस् — TAPAS
The fire of transformation
TAPAS: Fueling the fire of self-transformation
The heat we endure becomes the light we embody.
Tapas is the heat created through conscious discipline and dedicated spiritual practice.
It’s the choice to stay with the practice long enough for it to work on us, to purify, strengthen and transform us from within { our daily sādhanā }.
This month we work with that fire through the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. Over the next 31 days, we will practice 108 repetitions each day. Every repetition is an offering, an deliberate act of devotion to the sacred fire, a way of generating the heat needed to work through and melt our fear, limitations, old patterns and anything that is ready to be released.
Tapas strengthens the mind, builds will-power and asks us to meet ourselves honestly through our practice. The more fully we give ourselves to the sādhanā, the more space we create for healing, change and transformation.
Step into the fire! Commit to the sādhanā! Let it transform you!
MAHĀ MṚTYUÑJAYA MANTRA
The Mantra to Overcome Fear
Om Tryambakam Yajāmahe Sugandhim Pushti-VardhanamUrvārukamiva Bandhanān Mrityor Mukshiya Māmritāt
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ॥
Om Tryambakam Yajāmahe
A reference to the awakened ‘Eye’ of spiritual insight (the Eye of Shiva).
Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam
A reference to pure ‘spiritual fragrance’ which is compassion, that which nourishes all beings.
Urvārukamiva Bandhanān
May this higher clarity and compassion for all beings sever my bondage to delusion, releasing me from worldly attachments.
Mrityor Mukshiya Māmritāt
And thus with great strength, liberate me from the fear of death and reunite me with my immortal Self.
The Alchemy of Purification:
At its deepest level, Tapas means spiritual purification through inner heat and discipline.
Every habit, unhealed fear, and old conditioning leaves a subtle residue in our energy body, like a heaviness that keeps us bound to old versions of ourselves, and keeps us repeating the same ‘bad’ habits, patterns and reactions. So think of tapas is the deliberate friction cultivated to melt these stuck patterns. Think of your consciousness passing through the heat of dedicated sādhanā to burn away delusions and karmic patterns.
This is a process of divine transformation. The heat created by the Mahā Mṛtyuñjaya Mantra helps clear what is held inside. It moves through the nervous system, stirs up old mental impressions (saṃskāras), and brings hidden or stuck things to the surface.
When these old patterns and heavy emotions come up, your only job is to not attach a story to them. Don't analyse the feeling or feed it with what if this and what if that, instead, you sit with the discomfort, acknowlege that it’s there and offer that friction directly to the fire.
You may have heard me frequently say “Your life/practice on the mat is for your life off the mat!” When the same challenges come up in life, this doesn’t mean you need to start chanting out loud (sometimes internally can help!) but you simply let go of the story, return to your centre and allow the feeling or emotional reaction to pass without feeding it (depending on the scenario).
So what remains after Tapas has done its work is your true nature: clear, steady, strong and peaceful.
Reflections for this month:
What programs or patterns am I still running that are holding me back?
Where is my mind giving up?
What am I resisting?
We use the bandhas in this months practice, if you aren’t familiar with the bandhas or didn’t do September sādhanā, please watch the video in December ‘Learning the Bandhas’. You will need to know this for the main practice

Kundalini Mudras
This is an introduction video to the remaining wo kundalini mudras we are using in the main practice. Please watch this video first so you are familiar with them as I won’t do too much explaining during the practice.
Please note: During yoga mudra I verbally cued the wrong thumb/nostril (physically it was correct, just the cue wasn’t!). When you are blasting out the air from each nostril, its firstly right thumb cover right nostril, blast air left nostril. Then inhale both, left thumb cover left nostril, blast air out of right.
Please make sure you are also applying mula bandha when you are in the fold (watch bandha video if you aren’t sure what it is).
The Fire of Transformation Practice
Your core practice for this month is all about cultivating Tapas ~ our spiritual discipline ~ , activating the sacred fire of transformation at the navel through the union of Ha and Ṭha, and using the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra to help us dissolve fear, attachments and anything keeping us stagnant and stuck.
Practice everyday throughout the month. Use the sādhanā checklist as your guide.
